Must start blog.
Must start reading business section in New York Times.
Must read trashy novel.
Must twitter.
Must hurry up and relax because it all goes crazy town in exactly four weeks.

This is the advice coming to me as to what a new MLIS student should be doing prior to starting grad school. So step one, according to Zachary Frazier at Hack Library School blog is to create a blog. So...here is me, starting my blog. I’ll be in touch about the rest.

So, for starters and explanation of the name:
I like anvils. Well, I like them at times, but more on that in a bit.

In the beginning there was this from Lorelei in Gilmore Girls season 4,

So where have all the anvils gone?

If you did watch the clip, notice the use of the word 'ubiquitous"? I had a conversation with a librarian a couple of nights ago, and apparently one can create a drinking game of the use of the word in MLIS text books and readings. (For the record, 12 pages read today, drinks taken 2.)

I actually set up this blog site over a year ago when taking a Web 2.0 workshop. Initially my plan was to create a blog to talk about teen literature, and obviously I got right on that. Anyways, so when I read Mr. Frazier's advice, I returned to my empty room that was waiting and ready. Back then, when I was deliberating on a name, I was on a road trip taken with my life's accomplice, Matt Cartwright, who in his family, anvils are passed down as family heirlooms. On a visit to his parents in Colorado, his uncle brought out a 300 lb. anvil from Kansas that was his grandfather's, and Anvil got to finish a two week long road trip as we traveled through Wyoming, Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, Idaho, and back to Oregon. Anvil was especially fun when we were going down the Teton Pass and its 10% grade, she really knows how to add a thrill.

Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled to have Anvil in the car, as she was in a pine box resembling a small coffin, taking up most of the car and visibility. But after a week or so of driving she became part of the family, especially after I realized that we were surprisingly getting better gas mileage with her there. So, I lovingly named this template of a blog after dear old Anvil, but by all means make any inferences you'd like to give the name a deeper meaning (I love technology, but I can be a bit of a luddite, getting hit over the head by an anvil=satori, etc).

I feel great pressure as I start this blog that I must have focus and purpose as to what it will be. I think that is what has kept me from getting started in the first place so for now, this blog will begin with my journey through graduate school as I work towards my Master of Library and Information Science. I will let it evolve into what it will become as we go.
